TOP KETO QUESTIONS
Please check back often as we will add more as we see them.
1 – How do I get started?
Keto is a set plan – 70% fat, 25% protein and 5% carbs. And strict Keto is quite strict and has a long list of rules. Please see our WHAT IS STRICT KETO page for more info on what is allowed and not allowed on strict keto.
2 – What do I eat?
You need to do a bit of research on your own — that is the honest truth – so please consider ordering a book or downloading a book. Our quick start guide will help you get going but the more you know about the why and how will help you stick to the program
3 – I am so thirsty. Why?
Extra thirst on the first few weeks of Keto is common. If this is an ongoing thing, go to your doctor. Drinking more and taking an electrolyte supplement will help fix this for most people who are healthy and doing keto.
4 – Why are people telling me to drink pickle juice?
Ok, so on Keto, there is a cult of pickle juice drinking people. Pickle juice has very high sodium so in your early days of keto, if you are low on sodium, it may help. BUT, it does not have all of your electrolytes so you may still be missing some minerals. And it is very high in sodium so it may not be the best for a lot of people. You may do better with an electrolyte supplement where you can get all of your electrolytes or work harder on getting them all from your food.
5 – Why is my hair falling out?
While I see this comment a lot, it is actually quite rare so if you are experiencing hair loss on Keto, there are a few reasons. One is that you are not doing Keto correctly and are restricting your calories too much and not getting the appropriate nutrients so your body is unhappy and this is causing your hair loss. Don’t get defensive on these comments. This is the honest truth. If you have had any kind of gastric bypass, your issues are being caused by that, not most likely from keto. If that is the case, you have an issue with absorbing vitamins and minerals and you should talk to your doctor about what supplements to take for your situation. If you have not had gastric bypass, try to adjust your keto to a more balanced approach. You need to eat vegetables in order to get some of the nutrients that help hair grow (like biotin, magnesium, potassium, selenium) so if you are more of a carnivore, add some veggies. Now, for a lot of people, they are not meeting their protein macro so if that is you, start hitting your protein target and if you don’t track your macros, start now until you get your hair loss under control.
6. Why has my weight loss stopped?
You can hit a plateau or stall for a bit but an extended period of not losing weight when you have weight to lose is usually because you are not meeting your macros. Are you tracking your macros? Is there some sneaky carbs or a ton of calories getting in there.
7. Where does the Ketogenic diet come from?
The ketogenic diet was first developed in the 1920s as a treatment for epilepsy. It was initially used to help control seizures in children who did not respond to other treatments. The diet was based on the observation that fasting can help reduce seizures in people with epilepsy, and it involves consuming high amounts of fat, moderate amounts of protein, and very low amounts of carbohydrates. This puts the body into a state of ketosis, where it starts to burn fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. The diet fell out of favor in the 1950s as new medications became available to treat epilepsy, but it has since regained popularity as a weight-loss diet and for its potential health benefits. Today, the ketogenic diet is widely used as a way to help people lose weight, improve blood sugar control, and reduce inflammation.
